Sycamore and Walnut Coffee Table

Image
This coffee table uses American black walnut and European sycamore from our board store . Martin says " I used mortice and tenon joints for the legs and cross rails. The sycamore table top mitres were held together with hidden oak joining strips in a similar fashion to biscuits." Looking good!

Muhuhu- an aromatic wood with a spicy scent

Image
We have a new timber called Muhuhu ( Brachylaena hutchinsii if you're interested! ) We have it in blanks for wood turning at a bargain price- see the page  here for Muhuhu bowl blanks. Muhuhu heartwood is a darker chestnut brown, often with dark streaks and a green tinge. The grain is closely interlocked sometimes wavy or curly, with a fine even texture. The sapwood is quite distinct, being grey-white. This is an aromatic wood, with a spicy scent similar to sandal wood.  A fine finish is achievable with most tools. It sands well and is receptive to both surface and penetrative finishes.  This photo below is of a bowl turned from Muhuhu wood.

All about Tiger Oak

Image
Tiger Oak / Brown Oak is not a distinct species of Oak, but rather is European Oak that has been infected with a fungus. This fungus has the effect of turning the wood a deep brown colour. Type in the size you need on our website to get a price. Once the wood has been cut and dried, the fungus dies, leaving a rich golden brown colour.  Timber that has been partially affected is called Tiger Oak, timber that has been fully affected is called Brown Oak.  Boards are selected at random, so some may be fully brown and some may only be partially brown. With an oil finish, Tiger Oak will turn a beautiful deep brown colour. Tiger/Brown Oak is very durable and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Typical uses: Furniture and cabinet making, joinery, wood turning and carving. If you're really interested;  Fistulina hepatica (beefsteak fungus, also known as beefsteak polypore or ox tongue) is an unusual bracket fungus classified in the Agaricales, that is commonly see

It is very durable and is ideal for worktops and desktops etc. If you want an instant quotation to your required size, please follow this link here This worktop is shown awaiting collection from our client- it is bare wood with no finish/oil applied, and the edges are left square for the client to finish off themselves.

French Oak..

Image
We have just returned from an inspiring visit to some French sawmills, where we placed an order for some new stock arriving soon! I found this video on YouTube that show some of the operations of a French sawmill. This is not one of the sawmills we visited, and I didn't make this video, but I thought I'd show it here because it gives an insight into what goes on in the production of Oak. Enjoy!
